The mystery of the Hauensteiner bicycle boxes: waiting list and inconsistencies!

In Hauenstein there is a lot of guesswork about the award conditions for the popular bicycle boxes. These are of great importance for cyclists, but how to get them is not clear to many people. Neither the former local mayor Michael Zimmermann nor the incumbent mayor Steffen Mellein had an answer ready in the local council. This unsettles citizens, as Kerstin Riffel explains: She tried to rent a box, but fell on deaf ears and then ended up on the waiting list without ever being properly informed. This makes it clear that demand is high and there is a long waiting list.

Rumors are circulating about possible inheritances or gifts to acquaintances. Although there was a decision to purchase new boxes, the existing system remains opaque. The question always arises: What is actually in these boxes? Are there really bikes there? Or are there other secrets hiding behind the lockable doors?

Current situation at the main station

With a fluctuation of only 4 to 6 tenant changes per year, the system is quite stable, but expansions are hardly possible. The administration has no further plans for lockable boxes because the risk of vandalism and the cleaning effort are too high. Instead, the expansion of unenclosed bicycle parking options could be tackled. The estimated cost of purchasing five new boxes is around 8,000 euros. For ten boxes the price is almost double.

Bicycle stations in focus

As part of the Koblenz 2030 transport development plan, the creation of bicycle stations with workshops and rentals is also being considered. Despite great interest, implementation falls by the wayside due to the availability of suitable space. On September 28, 2017, it was decided to build a bicycle parking garage at the west exit. The construction of a collective garage will take place shortly and is estimated to cost between 40,000 and 50,000 euros. Investments in bicycle stations can be supported by state subsidies.

The street furniture, which also includes bicycle boxes, is manufactured by companies such as Zimmermann Stadtmöblierung. Great emphasis is placed on quality: the products are manufactured in-house and offer a five-year guarantee on materials and workmanship. This commitment ensures that the infrastructure in cities not only remains attractive but also functional. Ultimately, everyone benefits from a well-developed cycling infrastructure - whether commuting to work or enjoying a leisurely cycle at the weekend.
