Mayor Lohr visits Bio-Gram: Focus on innovations for Worms!

On June 6, 2025, Bio-Gram GmbH in Worms-Rheindürkheim was on Mayor Stephanie Lohr's agenda. She visited the company with a clear goal: to obtain information about the current status of the company's development. Since its founding in Ludwigshafen in 2019, Bio-Gram has made a name for itself, particularly through the development of alcohol-free, non-toxic staining solutions and automated staining systems. The company is now the only one in the world that produces such solutions and has patents in both the EU and the USA, as Worms.de reports.

Mayor Lohr was welcomed by managing director Petrit Blakaj and Dr. Bayram Cucu received. The focus of the conversation was company development, current challenges and the need for close cooperation with various regional partners, including the university, the IHK and the economic development agency. What was particularly exciting for those present was the tour of the new production facility at Altrheinstrasse 12, which has developed further since the last visit.

Innovative bio-technologies on the rise

The demand for innovative, alcohol-free coloring solutions is constantly growing. These offer an improved safety profile as they eliminate fire hazards and reduce toxic fumes in the laboratory. They are also more environmentally friendly than their alcohol-based alternatives because their use reduces the release of volatile organic compounds. According to Bio-Gram, these solutions not only protect biological samples but also preserve cell integrity during the staining process. Especially in times when safe and efficient laboratory practices are increasingly in demand, these solutions could make all the difference.

Bio-Gram GmbH moved to Worms thanks, among other things, to successful funding programs from the Rheinland-Pfalz Investment and Structural Bank (ISB). One of the biggest challenges facing the company is the upscaling process to expand production capacities. A large investor is urgently needed for this, ideally from Germany. The mayor reiterated her support for Worms companies and emphasized the importance of innovation and regional cooperation.

The role of innovative companies in medicine

BioVariance GmbH has also established itself in the broader context of biotechnology. Founded in 2013, the company aims to record the individually different effects of medications in order to better support patients. BioVariance was named one of the 100 most innovative German medium-sized companies in 2023 and is one of the leading innovators in the field of AI-based, personalized medical solutions. Their award with the “Global Excellence Award” underlines their status in the industry, as Biovariance shows.

The close collaborations and innovative approaches that companies like Bio-Gram and BioVariance pursue are essential to keeping pace with international competition. They impressively show where the journey in biotechnology can lead and open up new paths for a sustainable future - both in research and in clinical application.
