At 7:32 p.m., the district alerted the fire department after the first reports were received of a fire in the roof structure of the one-story bungalow on Dornenweg. The special? The resident is a fellow firefighter who was on vacation at the time of the fire. Fortunately, there were no injuries, which visibly relieved the emergency team.
When the emergency services, led by the experienced Roland Küpper, arrived at the scene of the fire, it quickly became apparent that the fire had already reached the rooms and smoke was rising between the roof shingles. In just a few minutes, the flames shot up through the roof. It was a race against time, as it was essential to prevent any spread to the neighboring building.
Fire service operations and challenges
The fire department used a total of five syringes to get the fire under control. A significant obstacle was access to the burning building - a hole in the thuja hedge was cut with a chainsaw to allow forces access. However, an interior attack was canceled for security reasons when the emergency services had to withdraw due to the imminent danger of the false ceiling collapsing.
The extinguishing work continued until late in the evening. The power supply was switched off by a Westnetz technician to ensure safe work. Thanks to the active support of the hygiene unit of the Lohmar Volunteer Fire Department, the emergency services were able to work in suitable clothing. The cause of the fire remains unclear; the police have started the investigation.
A look beyond the city limits
A similar incident recently took place in Landshut, where an extensive house fire in a two-story apartment building on May 3, 2025 put the fire department on alert. Fortunately, there were no injuries among the residents there either, although the flames spread quickly and posed a safety risk for the emergency services. Thanks to a professionally organized operation led by city fire officer Sebastian Öllerer, the firefighters had to partially break off the interior attack and carry out the extinguishing attack from the outside using turntable ladders. Such incidents illustrate how important trained emergency services and well-planned operations are.
