Saarbrücken's currywurst conquers Berlin: Kalinski brothers delight foodies!

Berlin, the German currywurst stronghold, will be the scene of a culinary duel from October 30, 2023. The Kalinski brothers, Elias and Joseph Klein from Saarbrücken, are bringing a breath of fresh air into the scene with their food truck under the motto “Chèvre Chaud Currywurst”. This creation was recently awarded the prestigious Uber Eats Award, as Berlin Live reported.

Until November 9th, Berliners can enjoy the special currywurst in the Bötzow area on Prenzlauer Allee, right on the corner of Saarbrücker Straße, or order it home via Uber Eats. Despite Berlin's high density of restaurants, currywurst enjoys remarkable popularity in Saarland - it is ordered seven times more often there than in the capital, as the Uber Newsroom highlights.

A creative currywurst

The Chèvre Chaud Currywurst combines traditional German fast food with creative accents and shows the brothers' skills. Elias and Joseph Klein, who work with passion in the catering industry, offer a special delicacy that brings new impetus to Berlin's currywurst culture. Interestingly, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi tried the Kalinski currywurst during one of his visits to Berlin and expressed enthusiasm about the product. Khosrowshahi praised the passion and ambition of the restaurant community, which gives the brothers additional momentum.

Currywurst itself has a long tradition in Germany. It is considered a classic fast food dish that usually consists of a bratwurst, often made of pork, and a special curry ketchup sauce. The idea goes back to the inventor Herta Heuwer, who first offered the dish in West Berlin in 1949 Wikipedia documented. Her recipe quickly caught on and became a cult object, not just in Berlin, but throughout Germany. It is estimated that 800 million curry sausages are consumed in Germany every year.

Longer term perspectives

The success of the Kalinski brothers sparks consideration of possibly opening a permanent currywurst shop in Berlin. The success of the food truck could be the first step towards a permanent establishment in the capital. This shows that competition in the Berlin currywurst market should not be frightening, but rather can provide new impetus.

If you're looking for a combination of tradition and innovation next week, you definitely shouldn't miss the Chèvre Chaud Currywurst. It's not just the taste that attracts visitors to the Bötzow area, but also the history and commitment of the Kalinski brothers, who prove that the future of German snack culture lies in creative hands.
