Saxony fights against a shortage of teachers: Model project started in Görlitz!
Görlitz, Deutschland - In Saxony there is a considerable lack of teachers that increasingly affects the educational landscape. According to current information from the Ministry of Culture, almost 1400 teachers are missing in Saxony, which means an increase of around 300 compared to the previous year. As a result, regulated lessons with fully covered timetables in many schools become a challenge. Oberschule and special schools are particularly affected, where every tenth hour is on schedule. Thomas Warkus, school director of the Görlitz secondary school, reported in a podcast that 14 percent of the hourly volume cannot be covered since the beginning of the school year. He demands quick and sustainable measures against the lack of teachers, especially in rural areas. Warkus also warns of growing “educational attendance” between the regions.
In order to meet these challenges, the Görlitz city center is carried out by a model project that is under the scientific direction of the Technical University of Dresden. The aim is to integrate teaching students into everyday school life early in order to reduce the dropout rate in the teacher degree. Around 2700 new teaching students start in Saxony every year, but it is targeted that more of it is successfully transferred to the education system.
Innovative approaches in the formation of teachers
On September 11, 2023, a key point paper was signed to strengthen the formation of the teaching fellow at the Technical University of Chemnitz. The signatories, including Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow and Minister of Culture Christian Piwarz, pursue the goal of promoting innovative approaches in the university training of teachers. It is a higher -level goal to successfully lead more students to the first state examination and to create perspectives for use in Southwest Saxony.
recommendations to combat the lack of teachers
The constant scientific commission of the Conference of Ministers of Culture has submitted recommendations for dealing with the acute lack of teachers. It was emphasized that all federal states are affected and that a trend -setting procedure is required. The recommendations should help to exploit and expand existing teacher potential.
- Examination of an addition to the working hours regulations for teachers
- limitation of the part -time work of teachers
- Restriction of the possibility for Sabbath years
- Expansion of initiatives to employ teachers in retirement
- Testing the temporary increase in the lesson obligation
Minister of Culture Piwarz considered the commission results as necessary and helpful. The requirements for teachers continue to grow, and it is crucial to offer them a comprehensive range of teaching, which also meets future generations. Saxony has also positioned itself as a leader in occupational health and health protection in school and plans long-term measures to improve the teacher lack situation.
