Because warns: the future of VW plant Osnabrück is on the brink!
Osnabrück, Deutschland - The future of the Volkswagen plant in Osnabrück faces major challenges. Lower Saxony's Prime Minister Stephan Weil demands from Volkswagen to take care of the location responsibly, since it is very small compared to other production facilities. Despite the burdens of tariff conflicts and economic considerations, it is crucial to check internal and external opportunities to secure the work. This was also recorded in the latest collective agreement, which the state government attaches great importance. A company spokesman for Volkswagen rejected reports on an already decided end of vehicle production in Osnabrück and explained that various options for the future of the work are examined ( FAZ ).
In this context, a breakthrough in the tariff dispute with the IG Metall was emerging. After over 70 hours of negotiations, the parties agreed that all Volkswagen works will be preserved in the future and that employment will be secured by 2030. This agreement also includes the socially acceptable dismantling of more than 35,000 jobs by 2030. In connection with the production facilities, this means that production in Osnabrück is expected to be discontinued in late summer 2027, while vehicle production ends in Dresden at the end of 2025. IG Metall commented on the agreement as painful contributions from the employees, which, however, should create perspectives ( der Shareholder ).
challenges for Volkswagen
Volkswagen is currently negotiating to strengthen the location in Osnabrück. Minister Weil emphasizes that the group is responsible for considering the economic reality of the small location. The negotiations ended successfully, but it remains uncertain how the closure of locations and the breakdown of the job will affect the local economy and the employees. A possible buyer for the work in Osnabrück is said to be an armaments group, possibly Renk, who is only located in Rheine for 33 minutes by car. Even if Daniela Cavallo, the general chairman of the works council, assures that no location is closed and there will be no termination -related dismissals, the reality of the situation in the automotive industry must be considered ( ZDF ).
The recent developments in the automotive industry, including the closure of works and the realignment of important technologies such as semiconductor technology and autonomous driving, require comprehensive adjustments. The Volkswagen Group plans to convert the "glass manufacturer" in Dresden into a center of these technologies. The decision about the closures and the realignment should help to create competitiveness and long -term perspectives for the remaining locations. Prime Minister Weil is relieved by the agreement, but warns of the upcoming challenges that go hand in hand with the job cuts ( Shareholder ).
