Elbe tunnel in Hamburg: Massive closures are imminent!

The Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg will be a real challenge for drivers in the coming weeks. From October 2025, the tunnel, which is passed through by around 120,000 vehicles every day, will be closed on several weekends. This is reported by the Mercury.

The first lockdown will begin on October 17th and last until October 20th, followed by further closures from November 7th to 10th and December 5th to 8th. On these days, the tunnel will be completely closed to traffic in both directions from Friday evening at 10 p.m. to Monday morning at 5 a.m.

Reasons for blocking

The measures are necessary to carry out various maintenance and improvement work. This includes the expansion of the noise protection systems, the connection to the A26 and a software update of the tunnel system. It is particularly important to expand the motorway to eight lanes so that traffic flow can be sustainably improved.

The diversions during the closures are clearly defined. Drivers are directed via the A1, A21 and B205. It is particularly recommended to use the A1 at the Horster triangle in the direction of Lübeck, then take the A21 to Kiel and finally change back to the A7 at Neumünster-Süd. Given the diversions, traffic jams and delays are to be expected, which will particularly affect travelers to Hamburg Airport, which is why the use of public transport is recommended.

Additional closures on the A7

It's not just the Elbe Tunnel that's causing traffic problems this fall. The Stellingen tunnel will also be affected. There will be a 55-hour closure on November 14-17, followed by a further 12-hour closure on December 6 and 7. Drivers should also be prepared for longer journey times.

The traffic situation around Hamburg will be a challenge for many travelers in autumn 2025. However, if you plan cleverly and get information in good time, you can avoid unpleasant surprises along the way. As always: good planning is key!
