Luca Witzke: Flensburg's new playmaker with big goals!

SG Flensburg-Handewitt has repositioned itself in the backcourt and is attacking with a breath of fresh air: Luca Witzke, a 26-year-old playmaker, is moving to the Fjord after six years at SC DHfK Leipzig. This move not only brings a talented player into the team, but also new hope for sporting success. Witzke has already played 51 international matches for the German national team and is determined to win titles with Flensburg, because for him success means above all wearing medals around his neck.

Witzke, who comes from North Rhine-Westphalia, successfully completed his move to Flensburg before the summer break. This gave him the opportunity to go on holiday in a relaxed manner before returning just two days before training began. In his first impressions, he describes Flensburg as a “small, cozy place by the water” and has already explored the city center, including visiting a café with his new teammates. He is also planning a special experience – going out on the water in a boat. “This will definitely be exciting!” said Witzke.

Goals and expectations

Witzke is already receiving the support of his new teammates on the field. He is particularly looking forward to working with Johannes Golla and Marko Grgic, whom he knows from the national team. He also keeps a close eye on Simon Pytlick and wants to create gaps for him in order to make the SG's attacks even more targeted. In his career so far, Witzke has never played club handball at an international level, but the anticipation for the EHF European League is palpable. “I can’t wait to meet new opponents, especially in Romania, where I’ve never been,” he says.

Witzke began his career in the A youth team at TUSEM Essen, where he played in the second division team from the 2017/18 season. He was able to quickly expand his success: in the 2018/19 season he scored 98 goals for Essen before moving to SC DHfK Leipzig in 2019. In 2018, he won the bronze medal for the German junior national team at the European Championships in Celje, Slovenia. Unfortunately, he was sidelined at the 2019 U21 European Championships due to injury.

A look at the balance sheet

Witzke's international record is impressive. In 2024 he won the silver medal with the German team at the Olympic Games in Paris, and his team previously reached 5th place at the 2023 World Cup. Despite the successes, the last World Cup in 2025 was less enjoyable for him and the team as they were eliminated in the quarterfinals and finished the competition in 6th place. On November 4, 2024, Witzke was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by the Federal President - a special honor for the talented player.

The goals are high, the expectations are there and Luca Witzke is ready to do his part to ensure that SG Flensburg-Handewitt is back at the top of handball. It looks like he will soon cause a sensation in Flensburg with his energy and commitment.
