Important closures: Elbtunnel Hamburg is costing drivers nerves!

The A7, Germany's longest motorway, stretches from the Danish border in Flensburg to our neighbor in Austria near Füssen. This autumn, drivers will be faced with a challenge as the Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg will be closed for a total of 55 hours. In the coming weekends, specifically from November 7th to 10th and December 5th to 8th, 2025, the tunnel will not be usable in both the north and south directions. This affects both lanes and the closures will begin at 10 p.m. on Fridays but will not end until 5 a.m. on Mondays. That means a long time without getting through!

The need for these downtimes is explained by various work: new traffic sign gantries are being installed, a software update of the tunnel system is being carried out and, last but not least, the noise protection system and the motorway are being expanded to eight lanes. As the Mercury reported, the diversion will take place via the A1, A21 and B205 during this time. Travelers heading north should turn onto the A1 at Horster triangle to avoid the traffic jam.

Plan for traffic jams and loss of time

It looks like the diversion routes are not far from traffic jams either. The previous closure of the eastern tube already brought eight kilometers of traffic jams on the A7 northwards - an experience that tested many vehicles and nerves. The daily traffic figures are also notable: around 120,000 vehicles pass through the Elbe Tunnel, with peaks of up to 130,000 road users between Waltershof and Volkspark.

If you want to go to Hamburg Airport in the near future, you should definitely allow more time or switch to public transport. The ADAC recommends planning ahead of time to avoid stressful encounters with traffic jams.

Further closures in prospect

The upcoming closures are not just limited to the Elbtunnel. The Stellingen tunnel will also be closed for 55 hours from November 14th to 17th and for 12 hours on December 6th and 7th. The work on this important motorway section is part of the comprehensive expansion of the A7, which primarily functions as an important north-south connection and connects the port and Hamburg airport with the surrounding area.

With this information up your sleeve, anyone who wants to drive on the A7 should prepare well in advance. It is clear that there is no need to avoid a solid plan - and this is especially true during the work ahead. So stay informed and be careful on the road!
