Geesthacht launches groundbreaking innovation park for green hydrogen!

A groundbreaking project saw the light of day in Geesthacht on July 15, 2025: the “Innovation and Science Park for Renewable Energies and Green Hydrogen” (IWP) was ceremonially opened. This park has set itself the ambitious goal of producing green hydrogen from renewable energy sources, particularly from offshore wind farms. So reported ln-online.de about the official launch of the IWP at the Geesthacht Innovation and Technology Center (GITZ), where around 70 guests from politics, business and science came together to illustrate the motto of the event: “Green hydrogen – the key element of the energy transition”.

The Duchy of Lauenburg region therefore plays a key role in the development of a sustainable hydrogen economy. Geesthacht has a long history of energy production, which includes, among other things, a pumped storage plant on the banks of the Elbe, which has been in operation since 1958. The photovoltaic modules that were installed on the dike of the reservoir basin provide additional support for the project. District Administrator Christoph Mager and State Secretary Joschka Knuth emphasized the importance of the IWP for the climate goals and the future viability of Germany as a location, which only benefits the city's aim to strengthen its competitiveness and innovative capacity.

An open innovation reservoir

The IWP presents itself as an open platform for innovation, technology transfer and regional value creation. Here, companies, especially medium-sized companies, can develop new hydrogen applications and bring them to market maturity. This close collaboration between research institutions, companies, start-ups and public actors is intended to form an effective network that will radiate not only regionally, but also nationally and internationally. metropolregion.hamburg.de highlights how important the Hamburg metropolitan region is for the production of green electricity and hydrogen.

In addition, a feasibility study will examine whether a network of several locations or a single location is suitable for the IWP. This study is divided into various modules, ranging from the analysis of the success criteria of existing IWPs to the creation of an implementation concept. The aim is to create an innovation ecosystem that has an impact far beyond the region's borders.

The vision for 2025 and beyond

The Hamburg Renewable Energies Cluster (EEHH) also sees itself being realigned and has identified the green hydrogen economy as an important element in its “Cluster Strategy 2025”. The focus is on the entire value chain of renewable energies, which also includes digital transformation. renewable-energies-hamburg.de describes the vision of developing the Hamburg metropolitan region into a model space for the energy transition, with the intelligent linking of all sectors and energy sources playing a central role.

The IWP in Geesthacht is therefore not only a significant step for the region, but also an important piece of the puzzle in the big picture of the energy transition in Germany. The aim here is to create a sustainable and future-proof energy system that reduces CO₂ emissions and reduces dependence on fossil fuels. A good hand for the green future is more than required here!
