Ratzeburg remains empty: urban development funding flows to neighboring towns!

Urban development funding in Schleswig-Holstein has recently caused a lot of conversation. Around 70.67 million euros will flow to 41 cities and municipalities to make them more attractive and livable. This support is intended to help communities make their city or districts future-proof. That's what she reports LN Online that Lauenburg will receive 1.2 million euros for the modernization of the upper town. This investment focuses, among other things, on the former shipyard workers' settlement “Koppel” and aims to improve the living environment, especially for pedestrians.

A further 3 million euros will be given to Mölln, where the renovation of the main street and an additional 30,000 euros for the footbridge are being initiated. Doch nicht alle Städte können sich über solche Gelder freuen. Ratzeburg, with its planned Aqua Siwa swimming pool, will not receive any urban development funding this year. Mayor Eckhard Graf (SPD) explains that the state primarily supports those cities that have already implemented concrete projects.

Ratzeburg's challenges and perspectives

The new swimming pool construction is still in the planning phase. Ratzeburg currently has 6.5 million euros available in an escrow account to fully finance the swimming construction, which is expected to cost a total of 24 million euros. However, Mayor Graf sees the city as having a duty to take risks in order to promote development. He is convinced that every euro of government funding results in valuable private and public investments in the region.

As the report from the Kiel Ministry of the Interior shows, the change in the age structure in Schleswig-Holstein also brings with it changes in the social and economic environments. People move between cities and surrounding areas, which is why urban development affects everyone. The beauty of cities becomes more visible through construction sites and road closures, which can surprisingly lead to the stabilization of disadvantaged parts of the city. Every euro invested in urban development funding has a direct impact on the quality of life and also supports small and medium-sized companies.

More than just numbers

The results of urban development funding show: The funds used not only create better living conditions, but also promote the regional construction industries and create jobs. Almost every euro provided by the federal and state governments results in seven times more investment. In this way, not only do the cities themselves benefit, but the surrounding areas are also strengthened.

The commitment to the cities is a true community project that benefits everyone involved. With the upcoming projects it is clear: Schleswig-Holstein is facing an exciting development that should be mastered with fresh ideas and a high level of financial support.
