Boris Herrmann: Off to the Ocean Race Europe – Kiel becomes the competition venue!
The starting signal for the Ocean Race Europe will be given in Kiel on August 10, 2025. At 3:45 p.m. the first starting flag falls for the seven participating Imocas, including the Cologne sailor Boris Herrmann and his team Malizia. This race opener will be broadcast live by NDR from 1:15 p.m. so that viewers can be up close as the yachts set off on their adventure under the eyes of enthusiastic fans. The teams will have to cover over 4,500 nautical miles in five stages to the finish at the picturesque Boka Bay in Montenegro, with the competition lasting until September 20th.
Boris Herrmann, who has been sailing in Kiel for 26 years, feels particularly connected to his hometown. “The whole region has done so much for sailing, so the start is very important to me,” explained Herrmann in an interview. The first stage goes from Kiel to Portsmouth, where arrival is expected after four to five days. Team Malizia has strong competition, including from Team Paprec Arkéa and Biotherm, as well as its former co-skipper Rosalin Kuiper, who now sails for Team Holcim – PRB.
Challenges and expectations
With a view to the challenges ahead, Herrmann describes the upcoming races as particularly intense, as constant adjustments to changing wind conditions and high shipping traffic density will be necessary. “The race does not have the rhythm of a transatlantic race, but requires constant adjustments,” said the experienced sailor. He and his team are aiming for a place on the podium, but are also mindful of the difficulties that the unpredictable wind conditions can bring.
“Team coordination is crucial, both on land and on the water,” he emphasizes. With a mix of experienced sailors and newcomers, the team enables an exciting dynamic - Justine Mettraux, Cole Brauer, Francesca Clapcich, Loïs Berrehar and onboard reporter Flore Hartout bring their own expertise. Herrmann is aware of the challenges, but also sees the opportunities to demonstrate his skills and those of his team. “The outcome is unclear,” he explains, “but we are ready.”
A farewell and new goals
After the regatta, the Malizia - Seaexplorer will be handed over to Francesca Clapcich, who will continue to run the ship under a new name. Herrmann plans to start the racing season with a new boat in 2026. His experiences from the less successful Vendée Globe have strengthened his belief that the Ocean Race Europe is an important event this year. “At my late 40s, I have the feeling that I can perform well,” says Herrmann, who particularly points out the positive environmental impact of sailing events.
The future remains promising for the passionate sailor. He is looking forward to continuing to sail in the Kiel Fjord and the Danish Southern Sea after his active time. He is clearly looking forward to the challenges of the upcoming race. “A safe start without collisions is the top priority,” he states, while emphasizing the cohesion and teamwork that are important for a successful outcome.
Anyone interested should mark August 10th in their calendars, because the Ocean Race Europe promises not only exciting competitions, but also a celebration for all sailing enthusiasts!
