Graffiti attack on Kiel state parliament: political messages exposed!

On the night of October 7, 2025, an unknown group of perpetrators sprayed anti-Israel graffiti on the facade of the Kiel state parliament. The incident, which included a total of 15 graffiti, occurred on the second anniversary of Hamas' devastating terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, which left around 1,200 people dead and many more displaced into the Gaza Strip. These connections to such a tragic date cast a particularly dark shadow over the acts, which Schleswig-Holstein's Prime Minister Daniel Günther described as "deeply disturbing and disgusting." Germany radio reports that the state parliament president Kristina Herbst also condemned the color attack by emphasizing that such acts undermine the appearance of a democratic house and attack respect for the common rules of living together.

The spray-painted slogans, which varied between “From the River to the Sea”, “Free Gaza” and “Free Greta”, were detected from the main entrance of the state parliament to the north parking lot. Schleswig-Holstein's Interior Minister Sabine Sütterlin-Waack also made negative comments and stated that the paint attack was not only an attack on democracy, but also mocked the victims of the massacre. The state security agency has now begun an investigation into the incident in order to hold the person or persons responsible accountable. Political support for the condemnation of the act also came from various factions, including the FDP and SSW.

An international echo

A similar incident occurred not only in Kiel, but also in Amsterdam. There the royal palace was daubed with red paint and an anti-Israel slogan. Here, too, a pro-Palestinian activist group claimed responsibility for the action, which referred to a previously banned demonstration. Mayor Femke Halsema called this act scandalous and unacceptable. n-tv reports that these incidents in both cities should be viewed not only from the regional political landscape, but also as part of a larger international discourse about the Middle East conflict and, for example, attitudes towards Israel and Palestine.

As a sign against vandalism incidents, several political actors in Kiel are challenged to continue to stand up for respectful coexistence and democratic values. In difficult times, it is essential to keep this dialogue open and vehemently take a stand against any form of extremism.
