Chaos at Berliner Platz: Posener Straße closed for two weeks!

Today, November 10, 2025, something changed in Lübeck: the construction site at Berliner Platz in the St.-Jürgen-Ring area and the eastern access to Geniner Straße is now completed. But while some breathe a sigh of relief, for others a new traffic jam begins. From Monday, November 10th, access to Posener Straße will be closed for two weeks until November 21st. This measure means that neither entrances nor exits to the roundabout are possible.

The traffic jam problem is particularly noticeable on Welsbachstrasse to the alternative route, where vehicles queue up to Lachswehrallee. A construction site on Posener Strasse, which has been active there for a week, is also causing a narrowing of the road in the area of Possehlstrasse and Lachswehrallee. These disruptions are expected to last until at least November 21st.

Roadway adjustments and pedestrian crossings

As part of these construction site measures, the roadway widths will be adjusted and the pedestrian crossing over Lachswehrallee in the direction of Lachswehrbrücke will be widened. However, a second crossing in the direction of Possehlstrasse will be omitted to relieve congestion. In addition, the reconstruction of the roundabout is scheduled for after the renovation of the Mühlentor Bridge.

Not a good time for a closure, especially after the western access to Geniner Straße also caused traffic jams at the beginning of November. This also has an impact on the emergency services on site: the fire brigade, Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe and police are active in the traffic jam zone, but getting out is becoming increasingly difficult.

The fire department exit is already signaled and the traffic lights should change to red in both directions in the event of an emergency. However, this is not always enough: ambulances have difficulty driving through Possehlstrasse and Welsbachstrasse, even with blue lights. This situation is exacerbated by the construction site on Moislinger Allee and further limits possible alternative routes.

Changes to construction site regulations

The renovations are necessary to ensure both safety and efficiency on construction sites. Clear guidelines for the design of footpaths and stairwells play a central role here. With the aim of creating more space, the responsible authorities will also ensure that the measures are implemented accordingly.

The current situation in Lübeck is not only a challenge for drivers, but also an important contribution to the long-term changes in the area of traffic and construction site regulations - changes that we will all feel, even if waiting in traffic jams is not exactly relaxing.
