Drama on the A20: Gas bottle detonates and causes massive closure!
A dramatic incident occurred on Tuesday evening on the A20 motorway when a Dutch car transporter loaded with a van and a motorhome caught fire. At around 8:20 p.m., several drivers reported a sea of flames rising between the Neukloster and Zurow junctions. The fire brigade was not only faced with a vehicle fire, but also with a potential explosion hazard as a gas cylinder in the mobile home detonated. These frightening events were carried out by the Northern Courier reported in detail.
The driver of the truck was able to steer the trailer onto the hard shoulder in time, which meant that four Dutch passengers, aged 30 to 69, were able to leave the vehicle safely. However, the occupants suffered a shock reaction and a 69-year-old passenger had to receive medical attention on site. While the fire brigade fought the fire, a total of six fire brigades from the surrounding towns were alerted to provide support, including Neukloster, Warin and Glasin. The column of smoke was visible from afar and led to a temporary closure of both directions of the motorway NDR reported.
Long-term impacts on traffic
Residents and commuters must also be prepared for disruptions on Wednesday morning. The road in the direction of Lübeck will remain closed until 8 a.m., while the road in the direction of Rostock was opened at around 9:55 p.m. after the gas bottles were recovered. The amount of damage amounts to around 70,000 euros to the vehicles, which were completely burned out, and 10,000 euros to the road.
The police assume that a technical defect caused the fire. Such incidents shed light on the general fire hazard of vehicles, according to a study by Statista strongly depends on the type of drive. The survey provides increasing evidence that certain types of vehicles may pose a higher risk of fire.
This incident shows how quickly situations can develop dramatically and how important it is to react quickly in an emergency. A big thank you to the emergency services who fight tirelessly for our safety in such crisis situations!
