Festive book launch: From the senator's widow to the chocolate princess!
An exciting literary event is coming up in Lübeck: On Sunday, November 23, 2025, at 11 a.m., the presentation of the new publication "From the Senator's Widow to the Chocolate Princess. Karsten Blocker's Thomas Mann Research 1993-2023" will take place in the museum shop "Buddenbrooks am Markt". This is the posthumous work by Karsten Blocker, a real expert on Thomas Mann research, which is published as the third volume in the series “From the Buddenbrookhaus Archives” by the Schmidt-Römhild publishing house. HL-Live reports that the publication presents a selection of Blocker's most important research contributions from the last three decades, which provide exciting insights into the life of the Mann family.
What is particularly noteworthy is that Karsten Blocker lived in the Mann family's last home, which gave him a unique perspective on their lives. His lectures and essays combined local historical topics with world literature, making him a prominent voice in research. The event will be moderated by Britta Dittmann, the archivist and librarian, and Manfred Eickhölter, chairman of the Buddenbrookhaus support association. Admission to the performance is free, but online registration is recommended via Buddenbrookhaus.
Changes in the event program
The event program also changed as part of the event. The original location was moved to the Scharbausaal of the city library. There will also be an exciting reading with the well-known writer Dorothee Elmiger. Elmiger, who was born in Switzerland in 1985 and lives in New York as a freelance author, will talk about her latest work, which is about people, monsters and being lost in the universe. Buddenbrookhaus emphasizes that her books have not only received numerous awards, but have also been translated into numerous languages and adapted for the stage.
The event promises to be a truly literary celebration, not just for Thomas Mann fans, but for everyone interested in contemporary literature. Nils Louen from Buddenbrookhaus will be the moderator and will guide the audience through the event.
Research and significance of Thomas Mann research
Thomas Mann research has gained in importance over the years, not least because of committed scientists such as Prof. Dr. Friedhelm Marx, who has been Vice President of the German Thomas Mann Society in Lübeck since 2006. Uni Bamberg emphasizes that Marx played a key role in the conception of international colloquia on the work of Thomas Mann. A volume of the Great Annotated Frankfurt Edition with essays by Thomas Mann is currently being prepared in Bamberg, which is supported by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation.
The preservation and research of Thomas Mann's work remains a lively topic that drives scientists and literature enthusiasts alike. The upcoming event on November 23rd is a sign that interest in Mann's literary legacy remains undiminished and continues to provide new food for thought.
