Dinosaurs on the campsite: Police warn of strange strangers!

On August 18, 2025, at around 8 p.m., an incident occurred in a tranquil campsite in Grube, Schleswig-Holstein, which reignited concerns about the safety of children. A man dressed in a dinosaur costume approached two young girls, aged five and six, and tried to encourage them to go with him. This was observed by a holidaymaker from North Rhine-Westphalia, who initially believed it was an entertainer at the site, reports NDR.

When the man and the children went to a secluded area of the campsite, the mothers alerted the situation and spoke to him. He explained that he was not acting on behalf of the campsite, but simply wanted to give the children some fun. Despite the unusual situation, no criminal action was taken and the man, a 40-year-old vacationer from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, has now been identified. The police clarified that attacks by strangers are usually rare and that the risk of abuse usually exists in familiar social environments.

Safety awareness for children

The police are using this incident to encourage parents to talk more about dealing with strangers. It is fundamental that children recognize the dangers and know how they should behave in critical situations. This includes the trust that must be constantly built between parents and children so that the latter can also tell about disturbing experiences, such as Intuitive parents explained.

Support from schools and communities is also essential. Prevention measures and community activities help create a safe environment. Safety training and workshops can enable children to better perceive and avoid dangers.

The police in Grube are being asked for further information in connection with the incident. Anyone who can contribute to the man's identity is asked to call 04364/7669920. It is hoped that such experiences can be avoided in the future and that parents are able to give their children the knowledge they need to protect themselves. Safety is a team effort – between parents, children and the community.
