New life for Steinburg's farms: A successful project is coming to an end!
In the picturesque Steinburg region, a remarkable project has come to a successful conclusion: “Steinburgs Höfe”. The final event on September 25, 2025 was the culmination of an important project to preserve and convert historical agricultural buildings. How Steinburg reports, this project was initially launched as part of the federal research project “Regional Branding” and was established in 2018 as a LEADER project under the name “New Life on Old Farms”. It has been continued as a district-owned project since 2022.
A central goal of “Steinburgs Höfe” was to support the owners of agricultural buildings that were built before 1945. The Steinburg district offered free initial consultations and financed concept development 50% from district funds. From 2018 to 2024, this led to 133 initial consultations and the implementation of 84 concepts. Another plus point was the cooperation with the Schleswig-Holstein Ministry of Agriculture, which made it possible to receive investment funding.
Expertise and networks create perspectives
The project not only aimed to preserve old farms, but also to build a network of experts from various fields such as architecture, monument preservation and construction. This is also evident in the final event, which offered lectures, insights into the project process and lively discussions about the future of rural buildings. These findings are not only of local value, but also reflect the idea that with passion and good expertise, cultural heritage can be preserved and shaped into the future.
In addition to “Steinburgs Höfen”, EU funding also plays an important role in rural development work. Loud BMELH LEADER and EIP Agri are important instruments for supporting innovative projects in rural regions. This funding enables local actors to form action groups and develop regional development concepts that contribute to improving agricultural structure and coastal protection.
The combination of the “Steinburgs Höfe” initiative and the EU funding programs shows the potential that lies in collaboration between different actors. Those involved have managed to develop a sustainable network that promotes innovation and sustainable development in rural regions.
