Children's Rights Award Ceremony: Creativity inspires 157 guests!

On June 14, 2025, the award ceremony for the “Children’s Rights in Focus” competition took place in the district council meeting room. A proud 157 guests were present at this important event, including the children's representative for the Stormarn district, Kerstin Hinsch. District President Hans-Werner Harmuth opened the celebrations and focused on the educational opportunities and educational issues that should benefit children and young people. The head of the youth welfare office, Carsten Reichentrog, also emphasized the central role of young people's engagement in society.

The event is notable not only for the number of participants, but also for the impressive projects that were recognized in five different categories. These include moving children's rights screens, self-written songs, podcasts, fortune cookies with messages and a huge sail that carries a political message. Such creative initiatives show how children and young people are actively raising their voices. In order to promote these projects, the Sparkasse Holstein foundations supported the award ceremony with a total amount of 9,850 euros.

A highlight of the event

A special highlight of the celebration was the honoring of Jörg Schumacher, the foundation's managing director, who was preparing for his retirement. The youth jury, consisting of members of the district student parliament, Stormini and children and youth advisory boards, played a crucial role in the selection process of the winning projects. State Secretary Johannes Albig concluded the event with an urgent speech about political responsibility and the implementation of children's rights, before the event ended with meetings, discussions and frenetic applause.

But what is actually behind the commitment to children's rights? The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which forms the basis for many of these initiatives, champions the rights of children and requires states parties to take measures that promote both the physical and mental health of children. Article 39, for example, calls for comprehensive recovery and reintegration for children who have suffered severe conditions such as neglect or abuse. The rights of children must also be respected in the area of justice, which is underpinned by Article 40.

Commitment is rewarded

In addition to local projects, commitment is also recognized at a national level. For over ten years, the German Children's Fund has been honoring children and young people who support social and political issues with the Golden Brat. This takes place as part of the “German Children and Youth Prize”, which is endowed with a total of 30,000 euros and is therefore one of the most highly endowed participation prizes in Germany. The categories include, among other things, solidarity, political commitment and children and youth culture.

The projects are nominated by partner organizations of the children's aid organization and specialists. A youth jury decides on the prize winners and honorable mentions. This not only strengthens the feeling of community, but also shows how important the voice of younger people is in our society. Further information about taking part in the competition can be found on the German Children's Fund website.
