Sports Day 2025: Kiel celebrates with over 150 sports and activities!
Sports fans in Schleswig-Holstein had a very special date in their calendar on September 7, 2025: the 28th Day of Sports took place in Kiel and at over 30 other locations. This largest popular sports event in the state attracted around 25,000 visitors and offered a colorful program that included everything from participation opportunities to impressive stage performances and sporting performances. Under the motto “See sport, experience sport, try sport” over 160 sports were able to be tried out, which was a great experience for everyone involved. Admission was free and the event ran from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
If the event didn't offer enough variety, visitors also had the opportunity to discover new sports such as skate hockey and Australian football. More than 150 different clubs and associations presented their offerings, which wonderfully showcased the diversity of sport in Schleswig-Holstein. State Parliament President Kristina Herbst was also the patron of the event, which gave the event additional weight.
Local events that attract attention
In addition to the positive sporting highlights, there was also some less positive news from Schleswig-Holstein. In Wangels, in the Ostholstein district, there was a fire in a thatched roof house that had been on fire since Monday morning. The fire brigade was alerted at 3:15 a.m., but the house was already completely affected when the emergency services arrived. Fortunately, the residents were not present, so there were no injuries. Residents were asked to keep windows and doors closed to protect themselves from smoke and smells.
Speaking of security: Starting next Monday, a cell phone ban will be introduced in schools in Schleswig-Holstein for around 370,000 students up to ninth grade. The individual schools have until the summer holidays to develop regulations for implementation in order to create a disruption-free learning environment.
Traffic changes and promotion of major events
There will also be some changes on the roads. From next Monday, a single-lane traffic system will be set up on the B433 at Hamburg Airport, which will last until the end of January. This is happening due to construction work on retaining walls and bridges. In addition, a section of the B5 near Husum will be closed, requiring diversions for drivers from the south. Anyone planning to travel by car in the coming weeks should consider appropriate routes.
In the context of major events, Schleswig-Holstein has also increased its support for such events. In a new guideline, the Ministry of the Interior has increased the maximum funding amount for major sporting events to 250,000 euros and also adjusted the criteria for eligible expenses. The aim is to bring more international and national sporting events into the country and to consider sustainable solutions to make the events more environmentally friendly. The state is thus demonstrating its commitment to continuing to strengthen sports culture.
Finally, it remains to be hoped that the positive and negative developments in Schleswig-Holstein will remain in balance and that the sports community will continue to grow together, while the weather for the next few days will be full of sunshine and temperatures between 21 and 25 degrees Celsius - only in the evening can regional rain be expected on the west coast.
