Battweiler sets a sign of life: Defibrillator secured by donation!

At the most recent meeting of the Battweiler municipal council, the focus of the discussion was to buy a defibrillator. The local association "Battweiler connects" has already promised a donation of 800 euros for the purchase. Overall, the costs for the defibrillator amount to around 1,600 euros, and local mayor Stefan Hlava announced that another two donations are expected to cover the remaining costs. These are to be officially accepted at the next council meeting.

The defibrillator is installed in the Konrad-Loschky-Halle, a central place that facilitates the provision of life-saving measures. Defibrillator therapy is an established and safe method that protects patients from life-threatening rhythm disorders, even if the fear of electroshocks can be a psychological stress. In addition, sensations can vary greatly during a shock, and it is not uncommon for patients to perceive this as uncomfortable.

financing and infrastructure

To finance the defibrillator, the municipality is available from the dirt road reserve around 25,000 euros. This reserve is fed by contributions of 13 euros per hectare. An expansion of the economic route "Im Schachen", which was also up for discussion, has been put up for the time being. The possibility of renovating this path could be difficult to finance without additional loans, even if the hunting cooperative is high.

Mayor Hlava brought the idea of creating a list of urgency for the business routes. A visit to the building committee and representatives of the hunting association is intended to help identify further ways that require renewal. This is done as part of a ten -year expansion program that is supposed to go to the planning after Easter.

New studies on defibrillators

The meaning of the defibrillators is underlined by new knowledge. A current study by the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) shows that patients with severe heart failure often get a defibrillator implanted, although the intervention is risky and often unnecessary. Only around 5 % of patients actually experience life -saving shocks. One approach of this investigation is to find out whether previous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can help identify suitable patients to avoid unnecessary interventions.

The study also evaluates whether certain physical features, such as scarring in the heart muscle, can be considered a criterion for the need for a defibrillator. Here, the study takes 760 patients with non-angry dilatative cardiomyopathy (NIDCM), which have a greatly reduced pump function. Positive results from this study could lead to the treatment guidelines for patients being changed significantly.

The implementation of defibrillators is therefore not only a step to improve emergency care at the local level, but also a significant challenge in medical research, where it is about identifying the right patients for such interventions.
