Prosperity in Germany: The scissors continue!
Prosperity in Germany: The scissors continue!
The current survey on the distribution of assets in Germany shows alarming numbers, which particularly affect poorer households. According to a study by the Bundesbank, the wealth of the poorer half of the population shrank between more than 20 percent between 2021 and 2023, adjusted in inflation. The average net assets of German households are around 324,000 euros in 2023, while the median value, which marks a better picture of the distribution of assets, is only 76,000 euros. This discrepancy illustrates the unequal distribution of prosperity in the country. Over 60 percent of the net assets are eliminated by the richest 10 percent of households, while the low -wicks have 50 percent of only almost 3 percent of the total assets. The Gini coefficient of assets that measures the unequal distribution is 76.34, which makes Germany one of the most frequent countries compared to the euro zone, and only in Austria is the distribution of assets even more unjust. Remszeitung reports .
The asset structure in Germany is just as complex. Means of households mainly have savings, self -used real estate and cars, while wealthier households often have real estate, business assets and securities. Another interesting aspect is that 39 percent of households have debt, which is a slight decline by 2 percentage points since 2021. This decline is associated in particular with consumption retention during corona pandemic. The data of the current survey comes from a survey of around 4,000 households, which was carried out between May 2023 and February 2024, and thus reflect the financial realities of many German households.
debt and savings culture
The analysis also shows that the proportion of households from 45 percent was reduced to 39 percent in 2023 in 2017. This could be an indication that an increased savings and budget discipline has found their way into. Nevertheless, 13 percent of the households clear that they cannot save because they lack the money. 4 percent save from unwillingness. Despite the difficult financial situation, the proportion of households that occasionally save, relatively stable, with 83 percent in 2023, compared to 85 percent in 2021. Süddeutsche Zeitung indicates that the next survey on Distribution of assets is already planned for 2026.
A comparison of the assets in the east and west of Germany also reveals significant differences. While the average net assets in the east between 2021 and 2023 rose nominal, at 170,100 euros it is still significantly behind the west, where households have an average of 364,900 euros. The highest net assets can be found in the federal states of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Hesse.
The current economic developments, such as sunken inflation rates and curvy stock market courses, have not yet been taken into account in the present study, but could significantly influence future surveys and analyzes.
