Pyrmonter ship doctor publishes gripping book about polar adventure!
Bad Pyrmont, Deutschland - dr. Jürgen Bennemann, 82 years old, published a book entitled "From Pol to Pol - as a ship doctor with the Polarstern 1996 and 1998 in Arctic and Antarctic". This work is based on his diary records, which he has been running since he was 13. In an interview, Bennemann expressed that he was inspired by his grandmother, who gave him books about pole discoveries. During his retirement in Bad Pyrmont, he revised these records.
Bennemann worked in a practice in Hameln between 1980 and 2008, where he looked after up to 75 patients a day. During the waiting times, he showed polar films that were very popular with his patients. Bennemann worked twice for three months as a ship doctor on the research ship Polarstern. At his first assignment on July 12th there was an emergency when the technical director of the ship collapsed and Bennemann immediately initiated resuscitation measures. After 30 minutes the injured person was brought to an ambulance.experiences on board the polarstern
As a ship doctor, Bennemann was responsible for hygiene on board, among other things, and organized the bord cinema. During his time on the ship, he tapped several hundred liters of beer for the crew. Although it was rarely medically caused by serious missions, he was well positioned due to his previous experience as a surgeon and orthopedist at the navy. These qualifications helped him to apply at shipping companies.
The polar stars, the research ship with which he worked, is equipped with a 20,000 hp engine and can paths with meter-high ice floes. Bennemann flew three times with a helicopter to observe the action from the air, and discovered a torn crane driver's house that saved the ship from a possible list. A special highlight of his second tour in 1998 was the visit to the Neumayer station in Antarctic. During an extremely stormy passage between Antarctica and Cape Town, the team spent three weeks in heavy storms.
His wife Ulrike came to Bremerhaven in Cape Town for the return trip. The team also experienced a baptism when crossing the 66th latitude in the south. Bennemann's book has been published by Novum-Verlag and costs 26.20 euros. It is available both as an e-book and English translation.
The Polarstern has a long history in polar research and has been a research ship for research trips in the Arctic and Antarctic since 1982. According to information from the Alfred-Wegener-Instituts has nine scientific laboratories, cold rooms and aquariums and can withstand outside temperatures up to -50 degrees Celsius. It is about 310 days a year at sea, with the focus between November and March on Antarctica and North Summer on the Arctic.
