Rain view gives hope: forest fire on the chunk under control
In the picturesque region around the Brocken, the highest peak of northern Germany, there is currently an alarm mood: a dangerous forest fire has broken out and the emergency services are struggling to get the flames under control. The situation has improved, but the hope for rain is increasingly being sought by the emergency services, according to the district fire chief of the Harz district. This weather change could occur from late Sunday evening.
"We expect several days, but hope that changing the big weather situation will end here on Monday," said Lohse. The German Weather Service has also announced that the weather situation could change significantly. Before that, however, warm air from Saxony-Anhalt will continue to endure the region. From Sunday evening, the clouds are to open and possibly bring heavy rains, some of which could achieve more than 40 liters per square meter.
intensive extinguishing work and support
The extinguishing work on site is intensive work. In the night of Sunday, the fire brigade activities were interrupted due to the dark, and only patrol trips took place. On Sunday morning, however, it continued: "From 8 a.m., the maximum of fire -fighting aircraft and helicopters will be in action," reported a spokesman for the city of Wernigerode. Up to eight helicopters and four planes should be active in the fight against the flames.
The emergency services are impressive in their number: on Saturday there were over 250 firefighters, including support groups from neighboring counties such as the Salzland district and the districts of Göttingen and Goslar, as well as from the technical relief organization and the Bundeswehr. A Bundeswehr helicopter crew filled its capacities and was expected again on Sunday to support the extinguishing work.
evacuations and blocking measures
The situation is so serious that the area concerned must remain closed to civilians. In particular, the residents of Braunlage and Torfhaus were asked to keep their windows and doors closed in order to protect themselves from smoke development. In addition, around 500 people were forced to be evacuated by buses by the Brocken on Friday. Due to these dangerous circumstances, the Harz narrow -gauge railways set the train traffic between three Annen Hohne and the Brocken to ensure the safety of travelers and residents.
The fire broke out on Friday on the Königsberg, a minor crop of the Brocken, and extends over a length of around 1,000 meters. Despite the progress in extinguishing the fire, the situation remains tense due to the extreme weather conditions and the risk of further fires. The on -site emergency services do everything possible to contain the flames as quickly as possible and to restore the security of the region.
The developments in the region not only show how important good organization and cooperation are in times of crisis, but also how fundamental the well -being of the residents for the emergency services. With the upcoming weather change, the situation could improve quickly, but until then everything remains in the balance, while the firefighters are tirelessly deployed.
