Ratzeburg's new strategy: This is how volunteering becomes city life!

Ratzeburg, Deutschland - The city of Ratzeburg is increasingly committed to volunteering and is developing into a "committed city". The focus is on promoting the voluntary commitment of the citizens. This happens in cooperation with the Diakonisches Werk Duchy of Lauenburg to develop a "engagement strategy". The aim of this strategy is to create a supportive framework for voluntary commitment. A survey on the description of the "commitment landscape" in Ratzeburg is currently being carried out, in which all organizations can participate that works with volunteers or voluntarily committed work.

The inclusion of voluntary engagement outside of traditional clubs, such as in neighborhood aid, should be particularly noted. There are difficulties in reaching committed helpers outside the neighborhoods. Mayor Eckhard Graf therefore invites you to an open afternoon coffee in the Ratzeburg town hall on May 20, 2025 at 4:00 p.m. This meeting is suitable for discussions with voluntarily committed citizens of neighborhood help. For interested parties who cannot take part in coffee, there is the possibility to download the questionnaire and filled out in the town hall, such as ratzeburg.de reports.

nationwide engagement strategy to strengthen the volunteer

At the national level, almost 29 million people in Germany voluntarily work. This often takes place in local clubs, where new forms of engagement also arise. A new federal commitment strategy aims to further strengthen this commitment and sets a framework for the commitment policy of the coming years. This strategy was decided by the Federal Cabinet on December 4, 2024 and replaces the "national commitment strategy of the Federal Government" that has existed since 2010. The development process included a one-year civil society process process, in which more than 10,000 people were involved with their ideas, as bmfsfj.de.

The overarching goals of the strategy are the strengthening of voluntary engagement in times of crisis, the enabling of participation and the recognition of diversity. Furthermore, structural challenges are to be mastered and the digital transformation of civil society is to be accompanied. In order to check the implementation status of the engagement strategy, the Federal Government will seek dialogue with civil society and other actors every two years.
