New tests for injury prophylaxis in young handball players in Leipzig

In German handball, an innovative process is tested that aims to significantly reduce the number of injuries among young players. The SC DHfK Leipzig and the Leipzig University Hospital have developed a comprehensive test program for the talents from the U15 to the U23. These tests that are carried out three times during the season - after the season, before the season and during the winter break - should ensure that the players are in their best physical condition.

The idea comes from Ralf Henkelmann, a person responsible who looks after the Juniors of SC DHfK. He explains that the tests contain a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the musculoskeletal system, whereby the focus is on the arms and legs. The aim of this measure is to identify possible weaknesses, to deal carefully and to create individual training plans. Henkelmann emphasizes that the findings from the tests are available to the athletic trainers and physiotherapists who can then specifically respond to the specific needs of the players.

The procedure of the analyzes

According to Henkelmann, it is crucial to see differences in the resilience of young athletes at an early stage. In this way, the training can be adjusted to avoid overload. In the case of significant deficits, it could even be necessary to temporarily suspend team training in order to give the affected players the necessary time for regeneration.

Matthias Albrecht, the youth coordinator of the Bundesliga club, sees this new approach a decisive measure for prevention. His goal is to be able to react to possible injury risks in good time through targeted analyzes. "In the best case, we ensure that the number of injuries drops noticeably," explains Albrecht optimistically. The initiative not only shows the commitment of the SC DHfK for the health of its players, but could also serve as a model for other teams in German handball.

The tests are part of a more comprehensive strategy for promoting young players who pursue the goal of increasing sporting performance and at the same time avoiding injuries. The process combines the latest sports science knowledge with practical training methods, which should help the players to optimally use their physical prerequisite.

If this project should be successful, it could have far-reaching implications for young and professional sports, not only in Leipzig, but nationwide. The importance of health in sport cannot be assessed highly enough, and initiatives like this could initiate a paradigm shift in the way sports clubs deal with injury prevention.
