In a gripping game, FSV Mainz 05 won 3-1 against SV Wehen Wiesbaden after extra time. This game was particularly important because it is the first challenge for the Mainz after the departure of the promising Talent Brajan Gruda, whose switch to Brighton & Hove Albion became known last Wednesday.

a strong comeback for Mainz

The game took place in the Brita Arena in front of around 12,500 spectators who experienced an exciting duel. After a gap by Tarik Gözüsirin in the 15th minute, Mainz not only showed a committed performance, but also remarkable mental strength. In a first half in which the Wiesbaden cleverly defended and Mainz left little space for creativity, you felt a certain uncertainty among the Mainz.

Wiesbaden surprises the favorite

Although Mainz dominated the events at the beginning of the game, the Wiesbaden team brought the game upside down with their first real attack. Gözüsirin's hit put the Bundesliga club into a shock state from which they did not seem to wake up for a short time. The lack of creativity, which was obvious in Gruda's absence, led Mainz to the cabin at halftime with a 0-1 deficit. Goalkeeper Robin Zentner saved the 05er with a spectacular parade that prevented another goal.

The turn in the second half

After the half -time break, Mainz became braver and pushed for the equalization. Dominik Kohr finally compensated in the 59th minute. This goal gave the team of coach Bo Henriksen the necessary motivation to bring the game into extra time after both teams could not score any further goals in the regular season.

energy and determination decide the game

In the extension, the tension grew when the substitute Stefan Bell had the opportunity to take the lead, but unfortunately only hit the post. Nevertheless, Jonathan Burkardt and Nadiem Amiri proved their determination in 113 and 120.+1 minute and secured the 3-1 victory for Mainz, which paved the way into the next round of the DFB Cup.

a trend of surprises

The game offers insights into the competitiveness of the DFB Cup, where weaker teams often have the opportunity to shine against established clubs. SV Wehen Wiesbaden showed that you can also pass as a third division team with commitment and skillful playing, while Mainz in turn had to recognize that you could not go into play lightly against supposedly weaker opponents.

This encounter could mark the start of a number of fascinating DFB Cup games, in which subclass teams demonstrate their courage and challenge the Bundesliga teams. The spectators can look forward to the upcoming games and cheer which surprises of the DFB Cup still has.
