Mini World Championship brings handball passion to Nordenham!

Aurich, Deutschland - On May 4, 2025, HSG Unterweser organized a round of the World Cup of the Handball Association Lower Saxony-Bremen in the Mitte sports hall. Under the direction of coach Hauke ​​Mehrtens and assistant coach Sven Beyer, various teams competed, each supported by their fans. Before each game, the hymn of the respective country was played to promote the international atmosphere.

The World Mini World Cup simulates the World Handball Championship, which took place in January 2025, and the groups consist of four teams. The HSG Unterweser competed as "Argentina" and achieved the following results in their games:

  • HSG Unterweser (Argentina) won against TSV Bremervörde (Egypt) with 24: 2.
  • HSG Schwanewede/Neuenkirchen (Croatia) defeated OHV Aurich (Bahrain) with 14: 9.
  • HSG Unterweser lost against Schwanewede/Neuenkirchen with 11:14.
  • HSG Unterweser won against OHV Aurich with 20: 3, with goalkeeper Felix Beyer showing an outstanding performance.

In the overall ranking of the group, the HSG Unterweser qualified for the next round, which will take place on May 17 and 18, 2025. The final table of the group shows the following results:

in parallel to this event, the handball game community (HSG) Barnstorf/Diepholz carried out a cooperation project with several primary schools in Diepholz. This project, which took place for the fifth time, attracted 75 children in classes one to four. On four weekends in February and March, the children had the opportunity to learn handball and to take part in various activities such as coordination relays and a handball Olympics. The end of the project was also a "mini handball world championship", in which eleven mixed "countries" took part and a total of 248 goals.

The winners of the project championship were the Sweden team (1st place), Team Poland (2nd place) and Team France (3rd place). All participants were presented with gold medals and there were no official losers. The event was sponsored by the youth development association of HSG Barnstorf-Diepholz and organized by Sonja Syrnik, the youth coordinator of the HSG. At the award ceremony, Oliver Hubach, the chairman of the association, handed over to the school representatives as recognition for their commitment.
