Serious accident on the A31: Car overturns - drivers injured!

On April 16, 2025, a serious traffic accident occurred on the A31 motorway, near the Rheiderland car park in the district of Leer. A driver lost control of his vehicle and drove against the guardrail, which led to his car overturned several times. The driver suffered serious injuries and was immediately taken to the hospital by the rescue workers. The A31 had to be temporarily blocked in both directions during the rescue work and the accident recording, which led to significant traffic disruptions. The police have started the investigation into the cause of the accident, which is currently still unclear. The fire brigade also shared photos of use on its Facebook page.

Review of a shattering incident

A similar serious accident on the A31 occurred on July 18, 2020. A man from Oberhausen died when a truck driver unchecked at a traffic jam. In this incident, many inmates of the vehicles involved were holidaymakers from North Rhine-Westphalia and the Netherlands. A total of five vehicles were pushed together due to the impact, and several occupants were trapped in their vehicles. The rescue workers had to struggle to the scene of the accident because no emergency alleys were formed. The A31 was blocked in both directions. A total of four people, including a small child, were seriously injured, while 15 more people suffered minor injuries. Nine of the injuries were transported to hospitals with rescue helicopters and ambulances. The man from Oberhausen died at the scene of the accident, and a seriously injured dog had to be put to sleep by a veterinarian. Around 165 emergency services were in action and the entire rescue operation lasted about three hours.
