Climate activists hinder Sylt Airport: test attempt fails

On Saturday morning, an action by the climate initiative last generation caused a sensation at the airport of the North Sea island of Sylt. Two activists stuck to a private jet, while a third activist tried to enter the site and was stopped by the police.

Unplanned intervention

The planned action by the demonstrators to spray the aircraft with the "Oil Kills" message was thwarted by the immediate intervention of airport employees. Although the activists tried to send a clear message, they did not succeed in carrying out their color spray campaign.

Background of the protest

The last generation criticizes the oversized responsibility of wealthy people, especially owners of private jets, for climate change. They argue that a reduction in emissions can only be achieved through legal regulations. The activists believe that the highest income layer does too little to reduce their own environmental pollution.

reaction of the authorities and the public

The police acted quickly to defuse the situation. After the women had been solved from the ground, they were removed in a police car. Firefighters also set up two large fire trucks to shield the events from the public eye. Despite the campaign, flight operations on the Airport Sylt remained undisturbed according to the flight schedule.

Past similar protests

This incident is not the first of its kind in the same place. In June 2023, five activists sprayed a private jet with orange color and also stuck. The public prosecutor's office in Flensburg estimated the damage caused to at least one million euros. These repeated actions indicate a trend in which activists use creative protest methods to draw attention to the urgency of climate change.

The view of the last generation

Christian Bergemann, a spokesman for the last generation, explained that the failure of the current protest did not lower the motivation of the group. "It happens every now and then, but that doesn't mean that we stop," said Bergemann. The group sees itself as part of a greater movement for changes in dealing with climate change.

The incident at Sylt Airport is an important expression of the activist struggle against the negative climate effects caused by excessive consumption and high lifestyle. In view of the significant challenges that climate change brings, internal and external dialogues must be guided at how the environmental impact can be reduced.
