Historical ministerial appointment: Schleswig-Holsteiner conquer Berlin!

In a historical decision, two politicians from Schleswig-Holstein were appointed to the future federal government. Schleswig-Holstein's Prime Minister Daniel Günther nominated Johann WadePhul and Karin Prien as the new minister. WadePhul becomes foreign minister while Prien will take over the Ministry of Education and Family. These appointments enable Günther to receive direct access to political decision -making processes in Berlin.

The nomination was described by Günther as significant for Schleswig-Holstein, even if his relationship with the CDU Federal CEO Friedrich Merz is considered difficult. While Prien is now leaving a gap in the Kiel cabinet, there are already considerations for their successor. Günther wants to make sure that no name is known before the official decision so as not to harm Prien politically. The discussions on this include both considerations of party affiliation and technical expertise.

nomination and further developments

Friedrich Merz, the CDU party leader, presented the CDU ministers for the upcoming federal government on Monday. In the past few days, the CDU Federal Committee has agreed to the coalition agreement between the Union and the SPD, while the CSU has already agreed. The vote of the SPD is still pending, but is expected until Tuesday evening. In the event of approval, the coalition agreement could be signed on May 5 and Merz elected Chancellor on May 6th.

Günther congratulated WadePhul and Prien on their nomination and described them as historical. Prien has interfered in federal political issues in the past and is considered a representative of a more liberal CDU. WadePhul, which has been chairman of the state group of Schleswig-Holstein CDU MPs since 2017, began his political career in the Junge Union and was elected to the Bundestag in 2009.

In addition to WadePhul and Prien, further ministerial posts were announced, including Katherina Reiche (Minister of Economic Affairs), Patrick Schnieder (Minister of Transport) and Nina Warken (Minister of Health). The new ministers are expected to play significant roles in the implementation of the government's political agenda, whereby the focus is on the challenges with regard to infrastructure and digital transformation.
