On the island of Rügen, the LNG terminal Mukran has an uncertain future in front of it. It had once been designed in response to the gas crisis and the dependence on Russian gas, but now both public criticism and financial worries have grown about the project. What was intended as a strategic measure to ensure energy supply develops into a source of controversy and doubt.

The plans for the terminal were presented by the federal government with a lot of hope and foresight. In the middle of the hustle and bustle of a national energy crisis, Mukran should offer a quick and inexpensive solution. Today, however, it turns out that reality does not do justice to optimism. Instead of the forecast capacity of 13.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year, the actual utilization remains far behind the expectations. This has already led to hard allegations to those responsible.

A central problem of the Mukran terminal is the continued low capacity utilization. While efficient solutions were found in other systems such as Wilhelmshaven and Brunsbüttel, there are numerous hurdles to Mukran that hinder the company. Critics criticize the economy and fear that the constant costs of the system will continue to increase in the coming years. German environmental aid is also expressed: it refers to Mukran as "expensive and unnecessary investment ruins".

The non -competitive position of Mukran compared to other terminals increases the pressure on the operators. Regular drags in the harbor basin, which are essential for the functionality of the terminal, also contribute to the high running costs. This raises the question of whether the location is economically viable in the long run or whether the money should be invested elsewhere.

The social debate about necessity and strategy

The discussion about the LNG terminal Mukran is not limited to economic aspects. The voices of skepticism also grow from the population. In view of the filled gas stores in Germany and the various alternatives to gas supply, many citizens consider the terminal to be superfluous. In a changing energy market, Mukran could never achieve the intended results.

The voices multiply that require careful review of the permits. According to some experts, the terminal could be closed if the economic situation does not improve. It remains to be seen whether the Federal Government is willing to give up its original promises regarding the Mukran terminal or whether it continues to urge a sustainable solution to cope with the challenges in the energy sector.
