Police can now automatically locate emergency calls in Schleswig-Holstein!
From January 27, 2025, the police regional control centers in Schleswig-Holstein can automatically locate emergency calls under number 110. This is an important innovation that was previously prohibited by a police law that prohibited the access to geographic data. The new regulation aims to facilitate the localization of callers in emergencies, especially in stressful situations or in the case of unclear local knowledge.
Interior Minister Sabine Sütterlin-Waack (CDU) emphasizes the advantages of this measure for citizens in emergencies. The police union (GdP) supports the decision and sees it a relief for the daily work of the police forces. In addition, an information film in Lower Saxony is produced to inform about the correct use of the location and to provide relief to the emergency and emergency services.
Details for the implementation of emergency calling
The location of emergency calls under number 112 has been possible in Schleswig-Holstein since 2019. The central Advanced Mobile Location (AML) server, which determines the position of a caller, is located in Baden-Württemberg. So far, legal hurdles have been opposed to the transfer of the location data, as the police law in Baden-Württemberg prohibited this. The AML data is transferred from the manufacturers of the iOS and Android operating systems to the data end point in Baden-Württemberg.
The regional control centers have access to the location data of the callers for 60 minutes, after which they are automatically deleted. The SPD member of the state parliament Niclas Dürbrook had initiated the topic with a small request to the state government in March 2024.
On September 18, 2024, Instate Secretary Magdalena Finke signed the declaration of participation for the piloting of the Advanced Mobile Location (AML) service in Schleswig-Holstein. The operational and administrative implementation of the project was initiated by the State Police Office Schleswig-Holstein in cooperation with the Presidium Technology, Logistics and Service of the Baden-Württemberg state police. According to Baden-Württemberg, Schleswig-Holstein is the first federal state to use AML 110 in pilot operation with a web application.
