Lübeck grows: forecast shows increasing population by 2045!

The city of Lübeck faces a moderate population growth and significant demographic changes until 2045. A current forecast of the municipal statistical center shows that the population should increase to around 226,200 people by 2045, which corresponds to growth of around 3,000 people compared to 2025. These developments are mainly based on a positive migration balance. Without immigration, the population would probably fall to around 193,400.

In the period from 2025 to 2035, annual migration gains of over 2,000 people are forecast, while the annual surplus should decrease to around 1,200 people by 2045. A total of approximately 28,300 towers are expected by 2045. In particular, immigration is influenced by the Russian attack war on Ukraine, which lasted from 2022 to 2024

demographic changes and challenges

The population in Lübeck increasingly ages what has different challenges. An increase in over 67-year-olds is expected by 9,145 people, which increases their share from currently 20.7% to 24.5%. In contrast, a decline in the less than 20 years is forecast by 2,455 people, which reduces their share to 14.4%. In addition, a decline of 3,655 people is expected in the middle age group (20 to 67 years). These changes in particular present the health and care sector with new challenges.

The number of households is expected to increase from 126,651 to 129,670 by 2045, whereby an increase in one -person households is expected by 3,441 to around 72,000. This is accompanied by a decrease in households with more than two people. This leads to an increasing need for living space, especially for smaller and age -appropriate apartments. The results of the forecast will flow into the upcoming housing market report.

The city administration has already reacted with strategy processes to cover the labor requirement and optimize the municipal care requirements planning. However, the forecast assumptions are affected with certain uncertainties. The complete forecast can be found on the website of the city of Lübeck.

In a publication of the Statistical Yearbook 2019 to 2022, the development of the city is also pointed out. The yearbook comprises 229 diagrams, 242 tables and 12 cards and, among other things, documents that the population on December 31, 2022 with 222,077 people has been the highest in 43 years. Immigration surpluses were able to compensate for negative natural population movements. The detailed numbers and results are accessible on the website of the city of Lübeck.
