Baden-Baden: Discover French conversations and culture in November!
What's new from Baden-Baden, the charming city with a strong French influence? Looking back, Baden-Baden has experienced numerous cultural influences over the centuries, particularly from the French, Russians and English. But the influence of the French is particularly present and is reflected in the history and architecture of the city. The French flair is not only noticeable, but also part of the lifestyle of the population.
There is an interesting event on the program this month: the discussion group of the German-French Society meets to cultivate language skills and promote exchange. The dates are scheduled for Thursday, November 13th and Thursday, November 27th, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Baden-Baden City Library. Under the direction of Pierrette Stephan-Letondor, everyone who speaks French well and is interested in a lively exchange is invited. Admission is free and registration is not necessary, so anyone who wants to can get in without any problems.
The history of Baden
Baden not only has a remarkable cultural history, but is also historically significant. Originally the area lay on both sides of the Upper Rhine, but since the Napoleonic Wars it has only been considered east of the Rhine. The Margraves of Baden, who came from the House of Zähringen, made a significant contribution to the development of the region. From 1112 to 1535, a unified Margraviate of Baden existed, which was eventually divided into Baden-Durlach and Baden-Baden, both as a result of a devastating fire in Baden-Baden in 1689 and for other political considerations. The reunification under Margrave Karl Friedrich in 1771 marked an important turning point, and in 1806 the Grand Duchy of Baden was founded, which existed in the German Confederation until 1866 and in the German Empire until 1918.
Baden's geographical location is just as interesting. It extends to the Main and Tauber rivers and borders the French region of Alsace to the west. In the south you will find Switzerland, which underlines the close connections to neighboring countries that still exist today. Baden's diverse landscape, ranging from wine-growing areas to forested areas, is a popular destination for nature lovers.
A look at Baden, Morbihan
But Baden is not just a place in Germany. There is also a French commune with the same name in the Morbihan department in the Brittany region. This municipality is located on the Gulf of Morbihan and boasts 37 km of coastline and several small islands. The surrounding area displays a variety of landforms, ranging from flat beaches to steep cliffs. Baden is also home to numerous historical sites, including megaliths and remains of old fortresses, which reflect the region's exciting past and are of interest to visitors.
The municipality had a population of about 4,864 in 2022, which represents an increase since 2016. Baden has largely retained its agricultural origins, but is increasingly urbanized, especially near the coast. This is characterized by the Breton culture, which is alive in the region and is also reflected, among other things, in the Breton language.
Whether in Baden-Baden or in the French community in Morbihan - both places invite visitors and citizens to experience their history and culture up close. Enjoy the life, colors and sounds of both bathing areas!
