Tornado alarm in Baden-Württemberg: Ulm-Donaustetten affected!

Strong weather is keeping Baden-Württemberg on tenterhooks: a level IF2 tornado recently raged in Ulm-Donaustetten, causing considerable damage. The German Weather Service (DWD) doesn't do things by halves and describes the tornado as the strongest of the current season. The storm, which stretched 15.5 kilometers and reached wind speeds of up to 220 km/h, left ghost images in a residential area and on an avenue of trees, among others Mercury reported.

Fortunately, there were no injuries, but the fire department in Ulm was able to record a whole list of damage. In addition to covered roofs on several terraced houses that are now uninhabitable, parked cars, buildings and gardens were also severely affected. The dimensions are considerable and underline the danger of such weather events South Courier reported.

Tornado cases at a glance

However, the DWD did not only register this tornado. This year, three more tornado cases have been classified as plausible, although the exact circumstances are still partly up in the air. These incidents took place in:

  • Herrenberg (Landkreis Böblingen) am 1. Juni
  • Oberried (Landkreis Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald) am 1. Juni
  • Großraum Ludwigshafen/Mannheim am 2. Juni

A tornado is considered plausible if meteorological conditions are taken into account and weather radar indications are available, even if the imagery is missing. So far, the number of tornadoes in Germany remains relatively low compared to the long-term average of 49 per year. Surprising, considering that there were a total of 48 confirmed tornado cases in 2024, like that DWD has documented.

A look at the future

Tornadoes could occur again in the next two and a half summer months, especially in September, as optimal conditions could exist for this. As far as meteorologists are concerned, the threat of another tornado cannot be foreseen until then. So it remains to be seen whether this season will have one or two extremes in store that can rewrite Baden's weather history.

The current situation has made many Cologne residents, and not just them, sit up and take notice. Tornadoes are and remain a topic that affects us all and impressively shows how nature can also develop its power in this country.
