Traditional Mäschle bakery closes: 50 jobs at risk!

In a regrettable step, the traditional bakery Konditorei Mäschle GmbH & Co. KG is officially closing its doors at the end of the month. The company, which has a long history in the heart of the region, has fallen into insolvency due to economic difficulties. The Ravensburg district court opened insolvency proceedings on October 1, 2025 due to insolvency and excessive indebtedness schwaebische.de reported.

The insolvency administrator appointed by Pluta Rechtsanwalts GmbH, Michael Wahl, explained that the company was making losses under full-cost conditions. Despite filing for self-administration insolvency in spring 2024 and the cautious attempt at rescue by changing the name and reducing the branch network, the high running costs are an insurmountable hurdle. Of the original 15 branches, only five remained in the end before they also had to be closed.

fate of the employees

Around 50 employees have already been informed about the upcoming layoffs at a staff meeting. The affected employees now fear for their future as the branches will remain open until October 31, 2025 before the final curtain falls. However, creditors unanimously approved the closure, underscoring the sad state of the company's economic situation. Around 50 creditors are expected in the proceedings, which increases the complexity of the situation.

The news is particularly tragic because the company still had hope for a turnaround in the fall of 2024. An attempt to change the name to a GmbH and the plan to only operate six locations seemed to be a short-term solution. But liquidity problems arose again in August 2025, which led the bakery into an even greater downward trend.

The path to bankruptcy

The history of the Mäschle bakery goes back to better times, when the company was still considered stable and reliable. The temporary success after the switch to self-management seemed to be a bright spot in an otherwise worrying scenario in 2024, but the reality was different. The loss of the branch in Ehingen at the beginning of 2025 in particular was a fatal signal for the remaining locations.

Ultimately, a desired investor solution failed because, despite all efforts, no market participant was willing to take over either the bakery or individual branches. This shows how challenging the market situation in the industry currently is and raises questions about the future of many smaller bakeries in the region.
