On Tuesday, July 1st, the senior team cordially invites you to an information lecture in the Ellwangen sports center. From 2 p.m., visitors can relax with coffee and cake before Caritas employee Sonja Hummel gives valuable insights into the important topic of “living wills and health care power of attorney” at 3 p.m. The lecture is aimed at adults of all ages and is an excellent opportunity to deal with the crucial aspects of preventive care.

What can participants expect? The lecture will convey comprehensive content, including suitable forms, how to deal with special family constellations and the regulation of digital inheritance. As digital legacy becomes increasingly important in today's digital world, Hummel also sheds light on how to handle online accounts and data that should be managed after the end of life. An aspect that is becoming more and more important when you consider that in Germany users of digital platforms such as YouTube or Facebook regularly die without their digital estate being settled. Surviving families are often faced with the challenge of not having access to important content and news, which makes good planning all the more important.

Digital estate regulations

A crucial point in the lecture will be the design and organization of the digital legacy. Participants should create a list of their digital assets, which includes all passwords and user accounts. Recommendations include storing this list in a secure location, such as an encrypted USB stick or a bank safe deposit box. It is also advisable to use a password manager to keep track.

But what happens to the data when life comes to an end? It is important to decide early on who can access which data after death and what should happen to its contents. Many social media now offer the option of regulating the deletion of profiles after death. A written power of attorney can specify who will have control of the digital estate and should be dated and signed.

Arrange health care powers of attorney in a timely manner

In a similar context, the care authority of the city of Cologne, in cooperation with the Cologne Consumer Center, will also be holding a lecture on the topic of health care power of attorney and digital inheritance on Monday, April 7, 2025. The importance of a health care power of attorney is emphasized here, which is advisable even when you are of legal age in order to be able to manage your own affairs in the event of an accident or illness. It is estimated that such powers of attorney can help to avoid unwanted guardian appointments.

The lecture in Ellwangen on July 1st is accessible without registration or admission, but donations are requested.
