Sustainable talents from Böblingen: Students receive awards!

A warm welcome to the heart of Böblingen, where young talents not only go to school, but also set new standards in the field of sustainable development! Last weekend, a celebratory event took place at the Impact Hub Stuttgart to honor students who have worked hard for sustainable development throughout Baden-Württemberg. Among those honored was the Böblingen Commercial School Center, whose 16 committed students from grade 1 of the business high school shone with six impressive projects. This well-deserved honor was presented by State Secretary in the Ministry of the Environment, Andre Baumann, who praised the young people for making a significant contribution to sustainable development through their ideas.

The event was accompanied by Anita Merzbacher, board member of the Federal Association for Sustainable Economy, who encouraged the young activists to continue sharing their valuable experiences and insights. In a joint photo, the award-winning students proudly posed with Baumann, Merzbacher, their teachers and representatives of their partner companies - a picture of success that inspires for the future.

Support for sustainable education projects

But the commercial school center is not the only example of commitment in the region. Environment Minister Thekla Walker recently announced significant support of 165,000 euros for various educational initiatives in the country. This support is provided within the framework of the “Exemplary Projects in Education for Sustainable Development” program. A total of nine different projects were selected that aim to impart knowledge about sustainability and promote ecologically and socially just decisions among children, young people and adults. The funding amount per project can be up to 20,000 euros, financed from funds from Glückspirale.

Among the projects supported is, for example, the “SDGoal! – We make sport fit for tomorrow” project from the Bad Boll Evangelical Academy. The State Association for Cultural Youth Education Baden-Württemberg e.V. is also there with its “Tricks for future” project to create animated films on sustainability topics. There is also the interactive future game “Zukunftsbox Alb-Donau-Kreis”, which is supported by the Alb-Donau-Kreis district office, and many other exciting offers.

Recognition for education for sustainable development

Promoting sustainable concepts is more than just a one-off initiative. Since 2022, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research has been awarding the “National Prize – Education for Sustainable Development” every two years in cooperation with the German UNESCO Commission. This prize honors actors who deal qualitatively with education for sustainable development and bring it into society. The opportunity for ESD learning locations to receive awards also shows how important the topic is and how broad the support is. The corresponding applications are possible all year round.

In addition, those interested can access a comprehensive database that deals with the activities of ESD actors. Climate protection issues and innovative educational projects are also the focus of the current funding programs - there is a lot happening in Baden-Württemberg!

At a time when the challenges of climate change are being felt on both sides of school walls, the students of the Böblingen Commercial School Center and many other actors are setting an example. They show that with creativity and commitment, the younger generation can also make an unmistakable contribution to sustainable development. Here, education is not just imparted, but actively practiced - and that is what our society needs in the future!

Stay tuned and see how the projects develop and what new ideas the next generation comes up with!
