Nostalgic trip: With a steam locomotive into the Swiss mountains from Böblingen!
What an experience! On August 24, 2025, a nostalgic train journey from Mannheim to Chur in Switzerland starts that will not only make train fans rave. Lee Schröter, the tour guide for “NostalgieZugReisen GmbH”, leads guests over 300 kilometers through picturesque landscapes, past the coast of Lake Constance and into the captivating mountain world of the Swiss Alps. There is a lot to see and experience on the rails - and all of this at an impressive speed of up to 200 kilometers per hour, made possible by the BR 103 locomotive.
The train, which consists of cars from the 1970s and 1980s, brings a good dose of nostalgia. Guest anticipation is high, especially for vintage train lovers who have a genuine connection to these nostalgic train rides. Christoph and Andrea Jeremias from Leonberg are looking forward to taking photos of the famous health resort of St. Moritz. Gottfried Burkhardt from Grafenau also fondly remembers previous trips on old trains, while Otto Schittenhelm, an engineer who used to work for Deutsche Bahn, brings his expertise and enthusiasm for the BR 103. The train is completely sold out on August 24th and boarding is only possible in Germany.
A long journey with changes
The journey begins in Mannheim and leads over a distance of more than 300 kilometers to Chur. Passengers are treated to a breathtaking panorama during the journey. Once you have arrived in Chur, you have to change to a Rhaetian Railway train that will take the travelers on to St. Moritz. The weather there is actually extremely friendly and not as cool as one would have expected. The return journey begins at 5:30 p.m., arriving in Mannheim at around 1:55 a.m.
In Konstanz the locomotive changes and the train is pulled on by a slower engine, but this cannot diminish the anticipation of the breathtaking views. After all, such a nostalgic trip not only offers the opportunity to relax, but also to immerse yourself in the history of rail travel.
Nostalgia and culinary delights
Anyone who registers early can experience new adventures on the upcoming special trip with the EuroCity “Golden Roof” to Innsbruck on September 13, 2025. A BR103 express locomotive from the DB Museum Koblenz is used here. In addition to comfortable carriages from the 1980s, there are also culinary highlights, such as fresh breakfasts and tasty dishes served in the TEE dining car. The trips build bridges to many of the most beautiful cities and regions in Germany and beyond.
Anyone interested should decide quickly because the places are in great demand. Bookings can also be made by telephone and children under the age of four travel free of charge, of course without being entitled to a seat. If you want to travel with your dog, you should register this in advance.
So how about leaving everyday life behind and immersing yourself in a journey through time? Historic train rides are not only great fun, they are also an exciting way to get to know the country and its people better. On the way, the Weißwurst equator is crossed and Innsbruck, the enchanting capital of Tyrol, with its pretty sights becomes a real highlight. A city tour or a trip with the Nordkette cable cars to Hafelekar are waiting to be discovered.
For those looking for adventure, the past and future trips on the nostalgic trains are the perfect way to enjoy a break from everyday life. The combination of spectacular views, nostalgic flair and culinary delights could make the heart of any travel fan beat faster.
