Creepy creativity: Children design the ghost train in Oberndorf!
On October 31st it's that time again - Halloween is just around the corner and preparations are in full swing throughout Cologne. The focus is particularly on the youth art school in Oberndorf, which is transformed into a gruesome “Mauser Horror Castle”. This initiative runs from Tuesday to Friday and is part of a colorful holiday program that immerses children in the mysterious world of ghosts and witches. The head of the art school, Verena Boos, has taken notes and is already reporting on the numerous activities planned for this spooky festival.
The children are really into it: they make spooky decorations, cut skeletons out of strips of paper and build huge spiders out of cardboard. The highlight of the activities will be the premiere of an impressive seven meter long ghost train. Alisa, an eight-year-old enthusiast, takes on the role of press spokesperson and inspires with her stories about the crafts. Not only is the ghost train designed, mannequins are also quickly transformed into mummies to create an authentic Halloween atmosphere. Particularly exciting: The program is called “Mauserschrei Castle” because the building is at Mauserstrasse 1 – a successful creation of words that is well received by the children.
Halloween traditions
As with the preparations for “Burg Mauserschrei”, there is also growing interest in Halloween in other parts of Germany. More and more people in Germany are looking forward to October 31st and decorating their houses spookily. The Minten-Lohmann family from Wankum has transformed their home into a spooky place, colorfully decorated with pumpkin lanterns and scary costumes. In keeping with the old custom, children dressed as witches and skeletons go from house to house, shouting “Trick or treat!” and collect sweets. This tradition not only has its origins in Irish customs, but is also widespread in the USA.
There is also a charming lunch menu for the little party guests in Oberndorf. Pumpkin soup and other spooky snacks are a must on Halloween. How about monster donuts or spicy sausage finger hot dogs? Creative drinks, such as Halloween pumpkin drinks, also provide the right goosebumps factor. And if you are still looking for ideas for your own Halloween party, you will find numerous tips for exciting games and craft projects that will delight every little ghost hunter. A real highlight could be a “scary scavenger hunt” in your own garden, where children can look for clues.
An unforgettable night
In the evening, all of the creative work is presented: the children show their parents the ghost train and the spooky cabinet. We sing together – morning and evening – led by lecturers Nicole Haeger and Holger Klein. Good atmosphere and lots of fun are guaranteed! The whole thing is sure to be an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. And so Halloween will not only be a celebration of sweets, but also of creativity and togetherness.
With a good knack for choosing costumes and a dose of courage, this Halloween at “Mauser Horror Castle” will be a truly scary experience. Ghosts and witches roaming the streets will transform the Cologne neighborhood into a magical horror festival that will be remembered for a long time. The anticipation is great and the children are ready to live out their scary creativity to the fullest.
