On Tuesday last week, a spectacular tractor-trailer accident occurred in Wimberg that is unparalleled in local history. The 61-year-old driver lost control of his 18-ton tractor-trailer, which then plunged down a slope and crashed into a building. Fortunately, the driver suffered only serious but non-life-threatening injuries and the exact circumstances of the incident are still being clarified. Initially it was suspected that the trigger was a medical emergency, but this was not confirmed. Rather, a brief lack of attention on the part of the driver could have caused him to hit a curb before the tractor-trailer drove over a traffic island and finally rolled down the embankment. According to the Schwarzwälder Bote the police could tell the driver allege a traffic offense that could be punished with a fine of 35 euros.
The rescue operation was extremely complex and required the use of two large crane vehicles weighing 110 and 60 tons to get the tractor-trailer back on the road. The fire department was on duty with an impressive team of 12 vehicles and 47 personnel from the Calw, Altburg and Pforzheim departments. A crane truck from the Pforzheim fire department (44 tons) was also used to secure the tractor-trailer from further slipping with a steel cable. Overall, the material damage is estimated at around 150,000 euros.
