World climate summit in Brazil: A race against nature!
The World Climate Summit, which is taking place in Belém, Brazil, on the Amazon River, is currently attracting around 50,000 delegates from all over the world. In this crucial place where nature and humanity collide, Brazil is demonstrating the urgency of climate action. The Schwarzwaelder Bote reports that the world is heading for 2.8 degrees Celsius of warming by the end of this century, making the 1.5 degree goal a long way off. UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlights that global emissions continue to soar, recording the largest increase since 1957 in 2022.
The Paris Climate Agreement was signed ten years ago, but the challenges remain enormous. Wars and crises have led to climate protection being given less priority in many countries. Particularly explosive: US President Donald Trump is not expected at the conference because he has signed the withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and is planning to withdraw the US from the climate pact again. The press adds that only a third of states have submitted new climate protection plans by 2035.
The path to the success of the conference
Without clear progress in key areas, the summit could fall short of expectations. The press lists five ways the conference in Brazil can be successful:
Challenges and opportunities
The climate conference in Brazil is a last chance to avert the impending catastrophe and take concrete steps. Two years ago, Brazil was named host of the 30th World Climate Conference. But whether states will take this call seriously remains to be seen. The Schwarzwaelder Bote emphasizes that the dangers of deforestation could reach devastating proportions, and that the rainforest could even turn into savannah if the right measures are not taken in time.
The success of this conference could be a binding plan to phase out fossil fuels. Experts agree: The Paris Agreement keeps the world on a better course than it would be without such regulations. The course of the summit in the coming days will be decisive in determining whether the global community will fight together against the impending climate crises or whether the path to an uncertain future will continue.
