Attention Emmendingen: Strong thunderstorm with danger to life expected!
On June 30, 2025, the German Weather Service (DWD) has every reason to be concerned: an official weather warning was issued in the Emmendingen district, Baden-Württemberg, which is valid for the period from 8:45 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. Experts expect strong thunderstorms, heavy rainfall between 15 and 25 liters per square meter and gusts of wind that could reach speeds of around 60 km/h. This warning is no coincidence, as meteorologists have observed alarming developments in extreme weather events in recent years.
The dangers are diverse: lightning strikes could endanger life, while flying objects and rapid flooding of streets and underpasses threaten. It is particularly important to be careful in such weather conditions. The DWD recommends avoiding spending time outdoors, securing loose objects and avoiding endangered bodies of water. Such weather changes can be particularly treacherous, especially in the warm season, with temperatures of up to 31 degrees and humidity of 81%.
An increased danger from climate change
Scientific studies such as those carried out by the initiative World Weather Attribution, show that extreme weather events will occur twice as frequently in the future due to climate change. Last year's summer was the warmest on record and brought torrential rain in Central Europe. These extreme weather events can have devastating consequences, as demonstrated by the current events in Poland, the Czech Republic and Austria, where floods caused enormous devastation.
Scientists argue that as many as 24 people lost their lives in a single summer, while floods also forced thousands to flee their homes. This brings us to the question: Are we sufficiently prepared to deal with the consequences of climate change? It becomes clear again and again that old patterns that dismissed extreme weather as random events no longer apply.
Weather warnings in detail
As the DWD explains on its website, there are different warning levels for weather events. The current warning falls into the second level, which warns of significant but not necessarily exceptional weather. A more advanced warning (level 3) would mean that a real storm is imminent, while level 4 would indicate extremely dangerous weather conditions. But the urgency of the current situation should not be underestimated, as the weather forecasts show.
Cities are already trying to adapt their infrastructure and prepare for such events. However, the challenge remains to reduce the footprint of climate change without further aggravating conditions. Voices from science are calling for the focus to be placed on renewable energies and to keep political commitments to climate protection.
In the coming hours, residents in Emmendingen and the surrounding area should pay particular attention to weather developments and heed the DWD's recommendations: secure your loose objects, avoid bodies of water and adapt your behavior in traffic to avoid possible dangers.
