Full closure at Am Eichbächle: construction site chaos begins in Freiburg!

From next Monday, September 22nd, 2025, the Mooswald district in Freiburg will be temporarily rebuilt. Freiburg City Drainage is carrying out extensive renovation work on the combined sewer on Am Eichbächle Street, which is scheduled to last until mid-November 2025. The old combined sewer, dating from 1963, will be replaced by a larger reinforced concrete sewer to ensure better drainage. This is an important step towards more sustainable urban development and a more efficient transport system.

The affected section extends about 30 meters from the intersection with Elsässer Straße to house number 4. The street Am Eichbächle will be completely closed in this area. However, drivers have the option of driving to the construction site from Spittelackerstrasse. Elsässer Straße, on the other hand, will be closed on one side, with traffic controlled by traffic lights. Pedestrians must also expect detours. The sidewalk on the south side of Elsässer Straße between Im Rehwinkel and Hofackerstraße will be closed, so pedestrians will have to cross to the other side of the street.

New traffic regulations

Another circumstance that residents should be aware of is the shutdown of the pedestrian traffic lights on Hofackerstrasse. This will be replaced by a new zebra crossing on Libellenweg to ensure pedestrian safety. Cyclists are also affected: they can drive into the city in car traffic or have to take a signposted detour. The city drainage department asks all road users to understand the restrictions that will arise during the construction work.

But the renovations in Freiburg continue. Another project concerns the B31 in Schillerstrasse, where sewer work is also pending. From Monday, January 27, 2026, a section between Turmseestraße and Greiffeneggring/Schwarzwaldstraße will only be accessible in one lane. This work will also be carried out by Freiburg's own municipal drainage company, using the most modern techniques without digging up the ground. Preparations will begin shortly after the turn of the year and the measures are planned until March 2026. We therefore ask for your understanding for possible traffic disruptions.
