Explosive fire in the port of Hamburg: injured and A1 closed!
A devastating fire hit the port of Hamburg today, causing violent explosions and injuries. A fire broke out in a warehouse, apparently caused by a burning vehicle. The accident happened in the Veddel district, where the explosion of several compressed gas containers, presumably filled with nitrous oxide, sent debris flying onto the nearby Autobahn 1. Information on the number of injuries is not yet available, but it is assumed that the number is in the lower single digits PZ News reported.
The fire spread quickly and ignited at least one neighboring hall, while the fire department is on site with a strong contingent of five fire engines and several ambulances, supported by the airport fire department. Repeated bangs were heard, underlining the dramatic situation. A large cloud of smoke formed over the scene of the fire and was visible to residents. The fire department is now fighting intensively to get even the smaller fires on the site under control, reported World.
Traffic chaos and closures
The consequences of the fire are also clearly noticeable in road traffic. Autobahn 1 between Norderelbe and Moorfleet is completely closed, leading to significant traffic congestion. Traffic is backed up for 12 kilometers in the north direction, while two kilometers in the opposite direction are affected. There are also traffic jams on Autobahn 7, which amount to four kilometers to the north in front of the Elbe tunnel and five kilometers to the south. The police have called on the public to avoid the area as much as possible so as not to further hinder the emergency services.
Another point is that the fire has no impact on Deutsche Bahn's long-distance traffic - only the port railway is affected. This at least provides some relief for commuters and travelers as firefighters continue to work to fully contain the fire.
A look at fire statistics
Such incidents are not uncommon and represent an important topic in fire statistics. According to the CFS CTIF report, which provides a comprehensive analysis of fire statistics for 2022, numerous fires have been recorded around the world, prompting discussion about safety measures. The report details the various causes of fires and the associated operations, and provides insights into how fire departments respond to such threats globally.
