Leverkusen wins 2-0 against Freiburg – Hjulmand remains unbeaten!
On October 26, 2025, Bayer Leverkusen remains unbeaten in the Bundesliga under coach Kasper Hjulmand. A convincing 2-0 win against SC Freiburg not only marks another success, but also takes the Leverkusen team to third place in the table, level on points with Borussia Dortmund, who also have 17 points. Meanwhile, Freiburg suffered its first defeat since the end of August after five games unbeaten in the league.
In front of 30,210 spectators in the sold-out stadium, Ernest Poku in the 22nd minute and Edmond Tapsoba in the 52nd minute scored the goals of the evening. Poku, who scored after a back pass from Aleix Garcia, was impressed by Leverkusen's control of the game and ball security. The team has finally come to terms with the painful 7-2 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and is heading into the coming games with confidence.
The course of the game
Freiburg started with pressure, but after about 15 minutes Leverkusen found more calm in the game and took control. A free kick from Alejandro Grimaldo in the 17th minute was strongly saved by Noah Atubolu, the visitors' goalkeeper. Derry Scherhant had the best chance for Freiburg shortly before half-time, but failed miserably in the 40th minute.
In the second half, Tapsoba made it 2-0 shortly after the restart when he headed in a corner from Grimaldo. Freiburg had difficulty acting offensively in the next few minutes and was increasingly challenged defensively. Defender Philipp Lienhart was shown a yellow-red card in the 74th minute, meaning Freiburg were outnumbered in the final phase.
Changes in the starting eleven
Leverkusen made two changes compared to the last game: Jarell Quansah and Jonas Hofmann played for Robert Andrich and Claudio Echeverri from the start. Freiburg brought four new players into the starting lineup, including Lukas Kübler and Jordy Makengo, to improve the team's performance.
Although Freiburg made a few changes, the team was unable to maintain the pressure. Leverkusen dominated the action on the pitch and didn't allow Freiburg to really get through. In the end it became clear that Freiburg had come to terms with the defeat in the last quarter of an hour of the game and had retreated defensively.
The win for Bayer Leverkusen is not only a step forward in the league, but also shows that the team under Hjulmand has the right knack for drawing strength from adversity. The team remains a tough opponent in the Bundesliga and will perform with a lot of confidence in the coming games.
