Lions dream of the cup - Flensburg shatters the dream!

The handball fans in Heidelberg suffered a bitter setback on Wednesday evening. The Rhein-Neckar Löwen were eliminated from the DHB Cup after losing to SG Flensburg-Handewitt 32:38. Despite a thrilling game in the sold-out SNP Dome, where 3,791 spectators kept their fingers crossed for their lions, the dream of the Final Four in Cologne on April 18th and 19th was abruptly ended. A real drama that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the last second.

The game started anything but promising for the Lions. Flensburg pulled ahead with up to five goals in the first half and led 8:13 in the 18th minute. But the Lions showed fighting spirit: goalkeeper Mike Jensen came into the game and Haukur Thrastarson stood out with an excellent 7 goals. Shortly before the end of the first half, the Lions even managed to take the lead – 17:16 in the 27th minute. But after an even first half (18:18 at halftime), the second half ended with a weaker performance from the Lions.

Key game events and scorers

In the second half, it wasn't enough for the Lions to make the important goalkeeping saves to put Flensburg under pressure again. Captain Patrick Groetzki tried to motivate the team, but the efforts were fruitless. Flensburg proved to be the stronger team in the decisive phase of the game and didn't let the lions come back.

The Rhein-Neckar Löwen's goal scorers were:

  • Jannik Kohlbacher: 8 Tore
  • Max Sandell: 3 Tore
  • Rafael Baijens: 1 Tor
  • Stig Aspenbäck: 1 Tor
  • Andi Jaganjac: 1 Tor

On the other hand, SG Flensburg-Handewitt was successful thanks to Tønnesen (7 goals), Møller (7 goals) and Golla (5 goals). An impressive collective performance that ultimately secured progression. Despite the blatant efforts, coach Maik Machulla's team did not have the luck needed to advance to the next round of the cup.
