New palliative care ward in Heidelberg: support for the last journey!

In Heidelberg, a new palliative care ward was opened at the Agaplesion Bethanien Hospital on October 21, 2023, offering comprehensive care for terminally ill people in the last phase of their lives. The ceremonial opening was attended by Mayor Prof. Dr. Eckart Würzner and Isabel Hopp from the Dietmar Hopp Foundation, who presented the symbolic sponsorship sign. This new ward, which has been in operation since September 2023, was renovated for 383,000 euros and is one of the larger palliative care stations in Germany.

Up to 14 beds will be available in the future. Eight single rooms are currently being operated and the first patients will be admitted from September 1, 2025. The palliative team is led by Prof. Dr. It is led by Bernd Alt-Epping and is made up of doctors from the Heidelberg University Hospital and nursing staff from the Bethanien Hospital. The ward is strategically integrated into the UKHD's comprehensive palliative care concept, which guarantees holistic and continuous care and relieves pressure on intensive care areas.

Structural and conceptual details

The newly created palliative care ward was converted from a previous geriatric rehabilitation ward and offers a modern, inviting environment. The close synergies between the new palliative care unit and the geriatric palliative care unit at Bethanien Hospital are intended to ensure optimal care. This cooperation, which is unique in the region, ensures that patients receive not only medical but also human support at the highest level.

Technological advances in the industry

A look into the game world

Aside from health and technology, the world of the entertainment industry continues to cause a stir. One example is the classic “Pinball” or pinball machines, which have been linked to organized crime in Montreal in the past. The history of these devices dates back to the 1930s, although they disappeared from public life in the late 1950s due to legal changes. Despite all adversity and regulatory hurdles, the machines returned and are still very popular with collectors and gamers today. Particularly noteworthy is the collector Jocelyn Veilleux, who has recreated a nostalgic ambience from the 70s and 80s - perfect research for all game lovers!

In Heidelberg, the new palliative care ward shows that caring for people in critical phases of life is a top priority, while technologies and cultural trends are always changing. It remains exciting to see how these areas will develop and what synergies they may be able to create in the future.
