Traffic chaos in Heidelberg: Eppelheimer Straße is being redesigned!

In Heidelberg, there is currently a lot of work being done on Eppelheimer Straße. Heidelberg municipal utilities are taking care of the renewal of eight district heating compensators, which represents an important step in municipal heat planning. MRN News reported that construction work began in early June 2025 and is expected to last until early September.

Temporary bypass roads were set up to direct traffic through the construction site. Not only does this keep traffic flowing, but the businesses along Eppelheimer Straße are also easily accessible. The previously closed dead-end road to the tank tower can now also be used again.

Redesign and expansion of the infrastructure

But the renewal of the district heating pipes is not the only thing on the agenda. As part of this work, Eppelheimer Straße itself will also be redesigned. This includes the renewal and widening of cycle paths and sidewalks as well as the creation of barrier-free access. Wolff & Müller highlights that second construction sites in the coming years will advance the expansion of the district heating networks in the city in order to be able to provide climate-neutral heat from various sources such as environmental heat, biomass and geothermal energy by 2040.

The redesign between the Czerny Bridge and the Bauhaus is being driven forward with organizational skills by the municipal utilities and the city's civil engineering department. From January 2026, a further phase of redesign between Kölle Zoo and Bauhaus will follow, during which the height difference at the Bauhaus will also be straightened. The entire measure is designed to last around 18 months.

Climate neutrality in focus

Heidelberg is proud to be a pioneer when it comes to district heating, as 50% of its heating needs are already covered by this technology. As part of municipal heat planning, it is planned that all 11,000 municipalities in Germany will have structured heat planning by 2028. The aim is to achieve complete climate neutrality in heating by 2045, as shown by studies by German Cities Day is underpinned.

From the middle of the next decade onwards, citizens could benefit even more from green projects. The challenges of the heating transition are obvious, but by expanding the district heating networks, Heidelberg has its goals firmly in sight. We can look forward to the new chapter in energy supply!
